John Comer, CFP®

John Comer is a principal with Comer Consulting, LLC. John uses his marketing and business experience to help you create a focus for your practice. He uses his technical and relational skills to help you articulate the distinctive elements of your client experience. He uses his creative and project management skills to help you develop communication tools that create powerful first impressions with clients and prospects.

John started his career as a banker in 1980 and began focusing on affluent clients in 1986. After stints in international marketing and retail bank sales, he became a Certified Financial PlannerTM and transitioned to the financial planning industry. Earning experience as a financial planner, a product wholesaler, a trainer, a marketer and a general manager, John has:

  • created target marketing systems for a 10,000 person sales force,
  • developed training in client acquisition and financial planning delivery for affluent clients, and

  • created and led an international deposit company that grew to $3.5 billion.

John is an adjunct professor in the Financial Planning Certificate Programs at the University of Minnesota, Mankato and the University of St. Thomas.  He serves on local and national committees for the Financial Planning Association and is on the board of directors for the Minnesota Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.  His articles have been published in Financial Planning, Wealth Manager, Investment News, FPA Solutions magazine and the Practice Lifecycle portal of Financial Advisor magazine.  The monthly blog he writes for FPA has been featured in FPA SmartBrief multiple times.  He has been quoted in Financial Advisor magazine and the Star Tribune newspaper.  John has presented to the FPA, broker dealers and community groups.  John has been awarded the FPA' s 2011 Heart of Financial Planning Award and the FPA-Minnesota's 2010 Distinguished Service Award.

He lives with his wife, Donna, and their two boys in Plymouth. John has always enjoyed running but lately his running is limited to rushing to his sons' activities, to his church for programs or to local schools to help with financial education.
